Struggling with Focus? Understanding ADHD and the Path to Diagnosis

Writer: Selena Raines, DOSelena Raines, DO

As a board-certified family physician, I have seen firsthand how Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) impacts both children and adults. While many people associate ADHD with school-aged children who struggle with focus and impulsivity, the reality is that many adults also navigate life with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD. According to the CDC, approximately 7 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADHD, and studies suggest that around 6% of adults have ADHD, though many remain undiagnosed.

The Daily Struggles of ADHD

ADHD is more than just being easily distracted—it affects nearly every aspect of daily life. Children with ADHD may find it difficult to complete homework, stay organized, or follow multi-step instructions. They may struggle with impulsivity, leading to difficulties in social settings and misunderstandings with peers and teachers. Without appropriate support, these challenges can lead to frustration, low self-esteem, and academic setbacks.

For adults, ADHD often presents differently. Many of my adult patients with ADHD

experience chronic disorganization, difficulty managing time, and struggles with maintaining focus at work. They may feel overwhelmed by responsibilities, frequently misplace important items, or have trouble following through on tasks. These difficulties can impact professional success, relationships, and mental health, leading to increased stress and anxiety.

The Importance of Early Identification and Management

Early diagnosis and proper management of ADHD are crucial for academic achievement, workplace success, and overall well-being. Children with ADHD who receive appropriate support often experience improved classroom performance, better relationships, and increased self-confidence. Likewise, adults who receive proper diagnosis and accommodations can thrive in their careers and personal lives. Without intervention, ADHD can contribute to challenges such as difficulty maintaining focus, impulsive decision-making, disorganization, and struggles with time management, all of which can impact long-term success.

Managing ADHD often involves a combination of lifestyle strategies, behavioral therapy, and, in some cases, medication. Individualized approaches, such as structured routines, task management strategies, and accommodations at school or work, can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with ADHD. By identifying ADHD early, individuals can access the support they need to succeed in both their personal and professional lives.
